Begging for Change by Pulp
Lot’s of new music this week, and today we get to say something we honestly did not expect to write again: there’s a new single by Pulp. “Begging for Change” arrives as their contribution to War Child UK’s benefit compilation, and it feels like a perfectly Pulp way to return — sharp, socially aware, but still deeply human.
Pulp have always been masters of framing everyday struggle with a cinematic lens. From the outsider anthems of the 90s Britpop era to the more sober reflections of their later work, Jarvis Cocker and company have made a career out of turning the ordinary into something quietly epic. A charity compilation about conflict and its fallout gives them a new context, but the same instincts are there: observe, narrate, complicate.
“Begging for change, but it’s more than coins I’m after…”
Lines like these land differently in 2024, when “change” feels both like loose money and a desperate political wish. The track moves with a measured tension rather than a big chorus rush; it sounds like a band older, wiser, but still unwilling to look away. For long-time fans, it’s a reminder of why Pulp have always been one of our favorites: they never just soundtrack the moment, they interrogate it.
